Hazardous Waste
The Cities of Farmington and Farmington Hills annually
co-sponsor a Household Hazardous Materials Drop-off Day.
Hazardous waste technicians collect materials from 9:00 AM until 2:00 PM at Oakland Community College, Orchard Ridge Campus
27055 Orchard Lake Road on the first Saturday in May.
Contact the DPW at (248) 871-2850 for
specific date information.
Residents of Farmington, Farmington Hills, Novi, South Lyon,
Southfield, Walled Lake, and Wixom are welcome to participate and
must show a driver’s license as proof of residency.
Farmington Hills residents may also drop off hazardous materials
at any of the HazMat region-wide collection events sponsored by
the Resource Recovery and Recycling Authority of Southwest Oakland
County (RRRASOC). Please watch the Observer and the FOCUS
for specific dates and locations.
Items that can be disposed of at HazMat Days include cleaners,
oil-based paints, herbicides, insecticides, solvents, batteries,
motor oil, antifreeze, gasoline, fertilizers, and pool chemicals.
Used computer equipment is also accepted, including central
processing units, monitors, keyboards, mice, modems, and printers.
Items that are NOT accepted include latex paint (dry it out and
put it with your regular trash), fire extinguishers, radioactive
materials, explosives, and medical waste. Smoke detectors
are also not accepted, these can go out with your regular trash.
Please follow these guidelines when attending a HazMat day
event:
- Properly label each container and close the cap tightly.
- Do not bring containers that hold more than five gallons or
weigh more than 50 pounds.
- If a container is leaking, transfer it to one that is
secure.
- Place containers in a box with a sturdy bottom.
- Put the box on the floor or in the trunk. Do not put
it in the front seat.
- Stay in your car. HazMat technicians will unload the
hazardous materials for you.
